Task # 23 – Webolution Wrap-Up

I completed the survey.

I really enjoyed this whole experience.  It is a great and fun training tool.  I loved the tasks that introduced me to Lastfm, Clipmarks and PicNik.  All of these are sites I bookmarked.  I will use others that we learned about but these were my favorites.

Task # 22 – Blogs we like

I checked out all of the favorite blogs of Nancy and Cari.  I really liked the tastespotting blog – the pictures were scrumptious looking.  I also like pictures in cookbooks.  I enjoyed lifehacker also.  Yesterday when I was scouting it out I found a thing called DVD knife.  It let you mark a section of a DVD with the stop and end points so you could insert it in an e-mail, or for a presentation.  I could have used that when working on my Master’s degree.  I’m very new to blogging and although I’ve gone onto blogs on my own I don’t really have any favorites.  I will be reading other people’s comments to see what they like and maybe get some good ideas.

Task # 21 – Photo editing with Picnik

I loaded a picture from one of my cross country ski trips and added text to the picture to tell where it was taken.  I like this site and will use it again.

Task # 20 – Government Websites

Updated on 11/12.  Yesterday I went back to the Mesa County website.  I tried again to put my physical address in and discovered it works fine as long as I used Dr instead of Drive.

I went into the Mesa County website and found the Assessor link under departments.  After selecting “Assessor Lookup” I put my address in but got a message of no search results found so I selected “zoom to” and selected Fruita.  This brought up a general map that I could “zoom in” on and find my exact address.

On the State of Colorado website I did some searching under the “Services” tab for Unemployment Insurance Benefits.  I had to file an unemployment claim with the state of Florida when I got laid off so I wanted to compare the Florida site to the Colorado site.  I did a rough calculation to see what my weekly benefit would be if I had to file for unemployment.  I found out I would get $60 a week more in Colorado than I got from the state of Florida!  I liked the information that was available under the “How do I..” tab also.

I have used the IRS site, City of Grand Junction, City of Fruita and the Colorado Tax Forms sites before and got a lot of answers to questions and useful information.

Task # 19 – Wiki Scavenger Hunt

I got 100%.  Funny thing is, just last week I went out to the wiki and was just checking things out to see if there was anything new so most of the questions were familiar to me.

Task # 18 – Tiny URL and Zamzar

I converted a file on Zamzar and when I got the e-mail notification that it was converted I saw that the link was long so I converted it with Tiny URL to a 26 character link.  Pretty nifty!

original URL : (100 characters)

Task #17 – Library Professional Sites

I couldn’t stop at just visitng 2 of the sites featured in this task.  Of course I hit the Library Job Postings, not that I was looking for a job, but because it was the first one listed.  Seems to be a good resource if you were looking for a job.  I did find some broken links when going into some individual state sites.  Resource Shelf seemed to have good info.  I went to WatchNow to see if the videos for kids being offered on it might be something my teacher friend could use but the site seemed rather “unfriendly” to me.  I looked at the Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki.  Then I looked on the CLiC website to see if they had any good classes coming up.  I did a little extra searching on cataloging on the delicious site and came up with some sites that might be good reference tools.

Task #16 – Open Source Software and Open Office

I’ve always worked for big companies that always had Microsoft Office loaded on the machines we used and since I did some work from home I always had Microsoft Office loaded on my personal computers.  I never knew there was anything else.   I’ve only known about Open Source Software since working for the library and I have been pleasantly surprised with Firefox – so much so that I also use it at home now.  I read the definition of Open Source Initiative and I downloaded Open Office and took it for a ride.  I was surprised that the functionality of it was so close to Microsoft and I used the “Open documents” function to open both Word documents and Excel spreadsheets I had saved and they opened up just fine.  I’ll play around with it some more.  It’s good to know that this available and free is always good.

Task #15 – Clipmarks

Well, this was a whole new thing to me so I was game to try it out.  I watched the tutorial and it seemed easy enough so I hit the install button and followed all the instructions and got my little green clip button.  I moved the little orange box all over and selected a few things and got the “clipped” green box however I then realized I did not have the menu bar where I was supposed to select “done clipping”.  So, I couldn’t go much further than that.  I’ll be checking other people’s blogs to see how this is used because at this point I’m not sure what I would use it for.  I’m sure there are some good uses that I’m not aware of.

Task # 14 – Downloadable Audiobooks

I downloaded a book from the MCPLD website through OverDrive a few months ago.  It happened to be the only way I could get a popular book in a series I was reading and I really really wanted to read it at that moment.  I downloaded it to my laptop and listened to it that way.  I am not an audiobook fan – give me a printed book anytime.  I can’t stay focused when listening to a book.  I know that medium is very popular with others.

As for NetLibrary, I am familiar with this also.  My previous employer made eBooks available to us through NetLibrary and I had an account with them so I did not create one for this task.  I did go to the MCPLD website and go through all of the FAQ to be familiar with what a patron would be seeing if I had to help someone.
